Mr Richards started his career with AH Reed in 1946 after serving as a World War II pilot.
He established his own agency in 1976 and was agent to a large sable of children's a young adult writers, including Joy Cowley and Tessa Duder.
Storylines Children's Literature Trust chairwoman Dr Libby Limbrick says the rise of New Zealand children's publishing in the last three decades is due in large part to his support and quiet guidance.
And the New Zealand Society of Authors describes him as an iconic figure whose contribution to New Zealand publishing is unprecedented.
