Finn Dean wins book illustration competition

The Folio Society and The House of Illustration have announced the winner of their annual Book Illustration Competition, with artist Finn Dean winning for his work illustrating Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.

Dean was selected from 500 entrants, with his art now forming a commission for a new Folio Society edition of Huxley's book. A judging panel made up of Sir Christopher Frayling, John Sutherland, former winner Igor Karash and Flora Craig from House of Illustration and a team from the Folio Society praised his work.
Sutherland said: "At its most useful, illustration is not decorative, but interpretive. The world which Huxley imagines in Brave New World, terrifying and thought-provoking in equal measure, would seem to present a rich landscape to the illustrator but the fact that it is a book so well-known and so well-imagined actually doesn't make the task at all easy."

The new edition of Brave New World will be released in September, with a fresh introduction by Ursula K Le Guin.
Dean has won several awards for his illustrations before, with his work featured in Danny Boyle's latest film, "Trance". He is currently working on a series of book covers for Penguin.
This is third Book Illustration Commission, open to student and professional illustrators over the age of 18. The winning commission is worth £4,500, with five runners up each receiving a cash prize of £500.
