Antiquarian news from Ibookcollector

Photograph book

A photography book Man Ray Photographs 1920-1934, Paris was sold at a very small auction in a village called Hastings, Ontario, Canada. There were only three thousand copies printed.

Paul Stevens, who buys and sells used books as a hobby, recognised the artist’s name, and took a chance by bidding five dollars on the rare monograph.

Mr Stevens said that he knew the name and remembered advice from another book buyer that Man Ray’s books sold well. When he arrived home and checked online to see what they were selling for he was amazed to find that some copies were listed at $5,000.

Comic Sale

A collection of 60,000 comic books collected by an East Vancouver man were sold by Able Auctions at the biggest pure comic book auction in the city’s history last weekend.  The Incredible Hulk (the first copy) from 1962 sold for about $7,000. There were a number sold in the region of $1,000 and others at $200 – 400. Able Auctions do not reveal sales totals from its auctions.

About 600 people looked at the items for sale which included: the Fantastic Four, X-Men, Captain America and other Marvel and DC comic books.

Items were sold to buyers in Ontario, Texas and as far-a-field as South Africa.

Able Auctions advised that the original owner of the comic books, an East Vancouver man who dropped out of school at 16 to attend hundreds of conventions across North America, ran out of space in his home, storage locker and his brother’s house before deciding to sell off his prized collection
