NLS has recently added the very rare first and second 'Oor Wullie' annuals first published in 1940 and 1942 respectively, to the collections.
Dundee-based publisher D. C. Thomson unleashed the national favourite in the Sunday Post in 1936 but Wullie's very first annual came out in October 1940 in time for the second festive season of World War II. A second annual was published in 1942, but then Wullie sat out the War, due to paper shortages, and he only re-appeared in book form in 1948.
Footnote:
The Bookman remembers reading the Oor Wullie, and The Broons, comics and annuals as a boy back in the early fifties. I loved them although I sometimes struggled with the phonetic spelling of the words.
I felt quite nostalgic reading this piece abour Oor Wullie in the Ibookcollector - newsletter #230Ibookcollector is published by Rivendale Press Ltd and is available by weekly e-mail. Contact - info@ibookcollector.com
