ELIZABETH SMITHER STARS ON AOTEA STAGE

Diminuitive in stature but towering in literary talent and achievement poet/novelist/short story writer Elizabeth Smither was a star performer on the Aotea stage this morning skilfully lead by the effervescent Ponsonby bookseller Carole Beu.

This was a delightful session, a conversation between two articulate, enthusiastic women, nicely paused by Smither reading poetry and excerpts from her latest novel LOLA , (Beu advised the audience that the first printing is now sold out and Penguin are arranging an urgent reprint).

The audience of a hundred or so went away with smiles on their faces after this warm, quite special session.

Footnote:
Carole Beu of The Women's Bookshop and a trustee of the AWRF proved to be a model chairperson. She was warm and friendly, she knew her subject and her body of work like the back of her hand, she led strongly without being intrusive, allowed plenty of time for audience questions and she wound up the session with a minute to spare.
