WORDS ON A SMALL ISLAND
FIRST WAIHEKE ISLAND LITERARY FESTIVAL

Words on a small island, The Waiheke Literary Festival an inspiring festival of books including a food writer, dramatist and photographer, along with novelists, children’s writers and poets.
We believe this is the first ever book or literary festival to be held on the island,” says one of the Creative Directors, Geraldine O’Sullivan Beere ( McManus)

Geraldine is working together with the Waiheke Artworks Co-ordinator John Daly-Peoples, a well-known arts and book reviewer. They have designed a programme designed to bring to the island a celebration of words including both Waiheke and national writers.

The island is recognised for its wine and food, visual arts and music. The strong creative arts talent on the island also includes outstanding writers such as Janet Hunt and poet Dr Selina Tusitala Marsh.

The programme for Words on a Small Island includes one of New Zealand’s leading playwrights, Roger Hall , (pic left), and 2009 Montana award-winner, Kate de Goldi . Wellington based Kate De Goldi latest book The 10PM Question is a multi-award winner, and has become a must read for adults although it was written for an intended audience of teenagers.

The programme is a varied one from international expert on Kiwiana, Richard Wolfe to first time fiction writer and Waiheke resident, Dorothy Fowler. This tempting line up will certainly inspire the booklovers,” says Geraldine.
The festival will be based at Artworks and there is also a gala Literary Lunch at Mudbrick Restaurant with speakers Roger Hall and food writer Lauraine Jacobs.
The festival is being held on two weekdays rather than the weekend partly to provide an additional leisure activity for the many seniors who travel top the island during the week.

We also know many of those who live on the island have very busy weekends, in cellar doors, restaurants and accommodation. This is a chance for those that work their hardest at the weekend to join in. The weekends spill into time for family and entertaining on the island. It is an intimate festival and with that the chance to mix and mingle with many of the established writers in person.
