PAPER PLUS INVESTMENT MUST BE GOOD NEWS FOR THE NZ BOOK TRADE

Last Saturday I carried a story from the NZ Herald on the blog about the $22 million dollar investment Paper Plus was making over the next two years with the roll out of their new concept branding and layout.

They have now announced the introduction of a number of initiatives at store level including, in-store book champions, the guaranteed great read promise, expansion of the Kids Club, NZ Author campaign and a new advertising campaign to streamline the company’s focus on its core offer of books and stationery.
The company says it was "already reviewing its future plans when the recession hit and after extensive research and customer feedback decided to fast-track this development to secure its position in the marketplace".

The photos show, above left, an external shot of Paper Plus Sylvia Park (the first store to launch with the new branding) plus an internal shot of Paper Plus Masterton (the country’s largest Paper Plus store).
The Bookman reckons this investment by Paper Plus must be a good thing for the book trade and expresses admiration to paper Plus for their initiative and confidence.
I will have more to say about this shortly, and also comments on the other dominant chain, which sadly seems to becoming increasingly moribund with each passing month.

It is good news indeed. It does seem rather odd that there is this cycle of booksellers taking on the role of fully involved, seriously committed retailers who then stutter, fail and let the next one try.[One thinks of Bennetts, Dymocks, various incarnations of Whitcoulls, book side of Real Groovy, etc.] I do hope this succeeds. Otherwise it is such a waste of energy and money in a difficult field. A child asked me today why books cost so much and with booksellers having to add at least 50% markup you have to wonder if $22 million will get added to the retail prices here.

none of my blogger accounts give me access here - I may be doing something wrong but that is why I am posting as Anon.
