AUCKLAND ART GALLERY
Our city gallery is presently hosting Te Papa's wonderful exhibition, Rita Angus: Life & Vision from 1 August until 1 November 2009
Entry is free and the crowds have been flocking. If you lve in Auckland do be sure to visit. I saw it in Wellington last year and was hugely impressed.

Here is the official description:
Rita Angus: Life & Vision offers a compelling look at the work of one of this country's pioneer modern painters.
Drawing out stories from behind the paintings, the exhibition reveals Angus's commitment to pacifism, her feminist views, and her spiritual beliefs. Also evident are Angus's love of nature, her affinity for the New Zealand landscape, as well as her extraordinary technique.
Featuring works such as the iconic Cass (voted New Zealand's greatest painting in a 2006 television poll), Rita Angus: Life & Vision reveals the scope of Angus's practice over four decades (1929-1969).

Co-curated by William McAloon, Curator, Historical New Zealand Art at Te Papa, and Jill Trevelyan, author of the acclaimed biography of the artist published by Te Papa Press, pic right.
A full colour catalogue, pic left, complements the exhibition and is available from the Gallery shop.
Footnote:
Just across from the Upper Khatoum Place entry to the Gallery is one of my favourite smaller dealer galleries, OREXART, run by the lively Jennifer Buckley and in her latest newsletter she had this to say:
Congratulations are due to the Auckland Art Gallery for their superb Rita Angus show. The numbers of people going through are testament to the fact that there is a great fondness and regard for her work.
It’s also with much pleasure that we have had lots of folk making the little walk across the cobble stones to see us, and after being here for some fourteen years it is still lovely to hear regulars say that they enjoy our shows, and to hear newcomers say they didn’t know we were here! Which all tells me that, if Rita Angus was alive today, she would be delighted with the state of things: the receptiveness of the public to the new and the old is alive and well.
We should all be pleased.
