Bill Bailey: Part Troll, Part Judge

The comedian Bill Bailey is leading the hunt for the country’s funniest books in this year’s Roald Dahl Funny Prize.

The Roald Dahl Funny Prize is the first prize of its kind; founded to honour those books that make young people, and all of us, roar with laughter.

It was created in 2008 by Michael Rosen as part of his work as Children’s Laureate. Michael was concerned that the really rib-tickling, belly-holding, knee-slapping, side-splittingly funny books were being overlooked by other book awards.

This year, Bill Bailey will be joined by Michael Rosen (Chair), the author Louise ‘Queen of Teen’ Rennison, the illustrator Mini Grey and one of last year’s Roald Dahl Funny Prize winners, Andy Stanton.
The prize aims to reward those authors and artists who write and illustrate their books using humour in their stories, poetry and fiction.
Books will be judged in two categories: for children aged 6 years and under, and children aged 7– 14 years.

The shortlists will be announced on Monday 7 September just ahead of Roald Dahl Day on 13 September. The day celebrates Dahl’s life, legacy and glorious books with events across the UK (see http://www.roalddahlday.info/ for more).

The winner of each category will receive £2,500, which will be presented at an awards ceremony in London, in November.
