VSL PICKS:
White People, Postcards, Younger Than McCain
We can be forgiven if we occasionally toot our own horn, right? Well, now we have good reason to: Three websites that VSL recommended have been, or are soon to be, transmogrified into books, and we couldn’t be happier. What better validation could new media get than being turned into old media?
1. Stuff White People Like (published July 1) made a Times best seller out of Christian Lander’s Web chronicle of things Caucasians have a preference for — like black friends.
2. Postcards from Yo Momma, a trove of amusing e-mails from mothers to their children assembled by writers Doree Shafrir and Jessica Grose, will appear in book form next spring — just in time for Mother’s Day.
3. At 71, John McCain is the Grand Old Party boy of this election, and the website Things Younger Than McCain simply highlights the many items younger than the candidate — Israel, for instance. The site-inspired book, out in August, just before McCain is officially nominated, will cull the list to an appropriate 72.
The above story from one of my favourite New York websites, Very Short List., or VSL for short.
