NEW ZEALAND LISTENER May 17-23, 2008

For booklovers this is a cracker of an issue. Among the many goodies are the following:

*Three page tribute to Robin Dudding, a large piece from Tom McWilliams with shorter contributions by Fergus Barrowman, C.K.Stead (his poem is reproduced below) and Bill Manhire. Included is a great photo of Dudding with his mates Kevin Ireland and Anthony Stones taken in Queen Street in 1953.

*Review of God of Speed (Allen & Unwin) by Luke Davies who is attending the Auckland Writers & Readers Festival this week.

*Three page story by author Paula Morris an Hermione Lee and her books. Lee is another of the star authors at the Auckland Writers & Readers Festival this week.
Review of IN CONTINENTS by Richard Reeves (AUP).
The following poem by C.K.STead is reproduced from NZ Listener

Waving Goodbye (to Robin)
by CK Stead
The working port is a sheet of noisy light
across the harbour. Jen thinks she hears men’s voices
shouted above their fork-lifts, drifting
over the autumn water. Floodlit on the hill
the Museum stands to attention. Eastward
light and shadow scout’s-pace the Waterfront Drive.

Kay and I and Chris, Greg and Jenny –
today we watched good editor Dudding let down,
fruit and flowers on his plain-wood coffin,
while we sang to trees and sky those arcane ballads
he liked to croon – ‘Clementine’, ‘Yellow Bird’,
‘Cockles and Mussels’ – a life remembered, rich
in songs and daughters, books and chooks and friends,
fruit, vegies, flowers, never quite in tune.

Some shadowy tug or fishing boat chugs by
discreetly, puttering over the silky water.
Summer is always ending. Five good friends
on one veranda now, we’re looking across
to the brilliant city as if that were our past
and we at the rail, sailing out, waving goodbye.

And the poet's name is Richard Reeve - no s. His name and the book's title were incorrect in the Listener review.
