Brace for Brexit

At the Baileys Prize on Wednesday night the mood in the room was joyous at what has become one of the best parties on the book trade circuit.  But underneath the champagne-fuelled trade chatter the mood was decidedly more twitchy: in a matter of days we could be out of the European union.

How the atmosphere has changed since LBF in April, where the book trade bubble was fully operational, and the prospect of Brexit appeared impossibly remote. Although some had already given the matter considerable thought - full marks Richard Charkin - others were less concerned. Tim Hely Hutchinson at Hachette didn't even have a contingency plan: well, I bet he has one now.   MORE
