Film rights sold for Bologna hit

08.04.13 | Lisa Campbell - The Bookseller

The film rights to YA debut novel Half Bad by Sally Green have been snapped up by Fox 2000, hard on the heels of the book’s acquisition at the Bologna Book Fair.
The book, by Warrington-based Open University student Sally Green, was signed by Puffin editorial director Ben Horslen two days before Bologna and confidently hailed as “the book of the fair” by the publisher. Fox 2000 has now bought the film rights, with Twilight producer Karen Rosenfelt slated to produce it, according to Penguin. Green’s agent Claire Wilson of Rogers, Coleridge and White co-ordinated the film rights deal with the CAA’s Sally Wilcox based in Los Angeles.

Green said: “The interest from Hollywood has been phenomenal and agreeing a film deal in such a short space of time was quite overwhelming, but I was so impressed by Fox 2000 and Karen Rosenfelt that I couldn’t resist. I think many writers, me included, fantasise that they will get published and the film of the book will be made, but we never really believe it.”

Half Bad is the first title in Green’s Half Life trilogy, a supernatural thriller set in a modern world inhabited by covert witches.

Since being bought by Penguin, rights to the title have been snapped up by Viking US in a six-figure deal, with pre-empts accepted from Brazilian publisher Intrinseca and Israeli publisher Kinneret. The publisher has also received offers from eight publishers in Germany, five in France and four in Italy and has also received interest from the Netherlands and Serbia.

The book will be published under the Penguin imprint in spring 2014.
