A limited edition cloth-bound book featuring photographs taken by musician Tom Waits will go on sale on May 8th for £135.
Waits/Corbijn, a 272-page book described as photographs by Anton Corbijn with 'Curiosities' by Tom Waits will be released in a 'Collector’s Edition' of 6,600 copies. The book also features new writing by critic Robert Christgau and film director Jim Jarmusch.
The book is the chronicle of an artistic collaboration that goes back to 1977, when black-and-white photographs of the musician were taken by Corbijn in Holland. Corbijn has gone on to photograph musicians and actors as diverse as Miles Davis and Clint Eastwood - he took the iconic picture of U2 in the California desert for The Joshua Tree - and become a pioneer in music video and, more recently, an award-winning director of feature films.
"I love working with Anton, he’s someone with a real point of view. Believe me, I won’t go jumping off rocks wearing only a Dracula cape for just anyone,” Waits says.
Waits’ own photography, collected here for the first time, are described as being "of the vivid quotidian, stretching down through the years."
Corbijn says: “It’s rare to take photographs of someone over a 30+ year period. Our work together developed totally organically and that’s a beauty in itself. We are very serious about our work but when it comes to working together, we’re like children resisting maturity. It’s liberating and a much needed legal drug.”
Waits also made an appearance this month on The Simpsons in an episode called Homer Goes to Prep School where he takes on the role of a scruffy survivalist who introduces Homer to an organisation known as 'The Springfield Preppers. He has also just finished recording a new collection of songs of the sea with Keith Richards. Compiled in part by actor Johnny Depp, Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys will be released on 19th February.
