I am so very sorry to have to tell you that our much loved author Reginald Hill died peacefully in his sleep at home in Cumbria yesterday morning. For more than 40 years, Reg has been writing crime fiction of the very highest quality, including of course his best known work featuring detective duo Dalziel and Pascoe. The long-running BBC series based on the Dalziel and Pascoe novels brought his creations to millions of viewers around the world, and rightly placed him at the very forefront of the genre.
His most recent novel, The Woodcutter, showcased his remarkable talents and versatility, and was received with glowing reviews from critics and peers alike. He was one of our most loyal and treasured authors, the recipient of countless awards including the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger and Diamond Dagger, culminating in a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Harrogate Crime Festival. He will be remembered as one of the most talented and original crime writers of his generation and will be much missed by everyone at HarperCollins, especially his editor Julia Wisdom and the crime team.
