The Bookseller - 03.12.10 -Katie Allen
A title about a hurling club in Clare, Ireland, has won the William Hill Irish Sports Book of the Year.
Christy O'Connor's The Club (Penguin Ireland) was awarded the prize yesterday (2nd December). It follows the story of O'Connor's hurling club, for whom he was goalkeeper, through a season in 2009.
Accepting the award, O'Connor said that he had written the book in tribute to his daughter Róisín and former team-mate Ger Hoey, who both died within the space of a week. He said "I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to have won this award, particularly when you look at all the excellent sports books written this year.
"It is also a privilege when you consider some of the outstanding books to have won the William Hill award in the past and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the judges and public for their votes."
John Giles' A Football Man (Hodder) took second place while Declan Lynch's Days of Heaven (Gill & Macmillan) took third.
