New Zealand has some of the most magnificent and accessible wilderness areas on earth, and exploring them on foot is exhilarating and rewarding. The key to an enjoyable and safe outdoor adventure lies in sound preparation, and The New Zealand Trmaper’s Handbook is an excellent starting point. Aimed at beginning trampers, it gives practical and sensible information on:

- clothing, footwear and equipment
- maps and navigation
- weather, river crossings and other challenges
- safety and survival skills
- camping tips and hut etiquette
- the tramper’s pantry – eating well on the track
- useful pre-trip checklists

Written by two experienced trampers and featuring advice and anecdotes from other seasoned experts, The New Zealand Tramper’s Handbook tells you what you need to know to stay safe, have fun, forget about the blisters and focus on the beautiful view.

About the authors:

Sarah Bennett grew up in Blenheim. It was a school class tramp in Nelson Lakes National Park that piqued her interest in the outdoors, although she didn’t get into tramping with any real vigour until she met Lee Slater while living in England.

Lee Slater is an Essex lad, first bitten by the rambling bug in the Highlands of Scotland, the Yorkshire Moors and Peak District of England while at college and university.

Sarah and Lee live in Wellington, and remain avid trampers and campers. Together they have written Let’s Go Camping (Random House, 1999) and The Best of Wellington (Sarah Bennett Books, 2008). Sarah is also co-author of Lonely Planet’s New Zealand guide.
