I wrote over the weekend about the extensive coverage given to the best books for gifts in Canvas magazine, the mag that is included with the Weekend Herald every Saturday.
That coverage has been upstaged by the New Zealand Listener dated December 11-17, 2010 published today. Their Books of the Year feature runs to no less than 16 pages of mini reviews and is an invaluable look at much of the excellent publishing of 2010.
The December issue of North & South has three pages of book reviews with two thirds of one page being given over to Chris Bourke's large, impressive Blue Smoke: The Lost Dawn of New Zealand Popular Music 1918-1964 which reviewer Paul Little describes as "an indispensable book for anyone interested in NZ culture in general and music in particular".
While over at Metro, always supportive of books under editor Simon Wilson and book review editor Iain Sharp, there are five pages given over to book reviews with the interesting thing being that the space is devoted to only six reviews which means they get serious attention.
This issue of Metro is the annual Best of Auckland issue and included among Metro's picks are Best Bookseller which goes to Doris Mousdale's Arcadia Bookshop (right) in Newmarket's very trendy and impressive Osborne Street while Best Kid's Bookstore goes to The Dorothy Butler Childrens' Bookshop at Ponsonby's Three Lamps Corner.
Congratulations to you both.
