Pretentious. Antediluvian. Mean-spirited. Those are just some of the words that come to mind after reading this story, which describes the refusal of the publishers of Johanna Skibsrud's novel "The Sentimentalists" to allow mass production of her book, to meet the demand now that it has won the Giller Prize.
Her publisher, Gaspereau Press, produces beautiful books in a slow, meticulous, handcrafted way. It cannot deliver more than 1,000 a week. Fair enough. So Random House and two other publishers made an offer to print a large number of the books, to get it in on store shelves and in readers' hands and allow Ms. Skibsrud to capitalize on her success.
But Gaspereau has so far refused.
