This in the e-mail this afternoon.
Dear Five Dials subscriber,
It's cold here in Montreal, though a true Montrealer would say it's balmy for November. This morning snow blew past the hotel window before the skies cleared.
Tonight, we're here in la Maison des ecrivains on rue Laval, surrounded by shelves of French books, old and new, and a noisy crowd of Five Dials readers, local writers, mid-tour musicians, visiting editors and new friends from our new favourite city, plus the bar staff of the W Hotel, a few of the parents of our Ten Best Novelists Under Ten, and a prosecutor from the US Department of Justice. (He's off-duty).
Our latest issue is now ready for download. It's another big one, clocking in at fifty pages, and we've gathered some of the best writing from this place.
By now you may be familiar with the way this magazine operates. We like to send out the issue from an interesting place and we always make sure the 'send' button is pressed by an interesting person. Yesterday we were introduced to Richard Fortier, who works at la Maison des ecrivains but is also a country and western singer. Richard grew up in the northern reaches of Quebec and has agreed to sing one of his favorite Quebecois songs before pressing the button. 'I am going to sing Mille Après Mille,' he told us earlier. 'It's by a country singer who is no longer with us, Willie Lamothe. It's a sad song, a reminder of when I was young. For us, country and western is like the fado for the Portuguese. It makes me cry.'
Thanks to Richard for launching the issue and Stanley and Andre for making the night such a success.
