I'm a Bookworm
There are many good New Zealand authors, both historical and contemporary, and both in terms of literary and 'genre' writing. Some write stories set here, and others write stories not specific to a NZ setting. I heartily endorse the idea of giving some a go - just do a little Googling or ask Bookman, myself, or some other Kiwis - and we'll point you in the right direction of Kiwi books that are of the type that you enjoy reading
