GOING WEST FESTIVAL
SATURDAY AFTERNOON
It is 7.30pm and I'm home again; amazing how exhausted you feel after a day at a Festival even though you are just sitting being educated/entertained and occasionally enthralled.
A quick recap of a most enjoyable and highly varied afternoon which was dedicated to the celebration of Waitakere writing. For those who don't know,
I should explain that the Festival is taking part in Waitakere City in Auckland's west.
ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT
This session was of special interest to the local westies as it was built around WEST- THE HISTORY OF WAITAKERE (Random House) edited by the everywhere book man-about-town Finlay Macdonald and journalist/biographer Ruth Kerr accompanied by journalist/cyclist Rod Oram with readings frm the book by actor Simon Prast.
PIHA -GUARDIANS OF THE IRON SANDS
This book, written by westie author/researcher Sandra Coney, is a history of the Piha Surf Club, published to mark the club's 75th anniversary. Cney told us of her experience researching and writing the book and showed us a series of photographs from the book. A real nostalgia trip.
TITIRANGI TATLERS
Two first-time novelist, both locals, Lyn Loates, (Butterscotch), and Michele Powles, (Weathered Bones), provided an interesting look at their novels in spite of the sometimes tortured questioning of chair David Larsen.

The Bookman recomends both these novels, excellent reads.
THE SLINGS AND ARROWS OF OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE
Outrageous Fortune is a phenomenally successful local tv show set in West Auckland and in this enormously entertaining hour which frequently had the audience in stitches we listened to the two creators o the show, the talented drama writers Rachel Lang and James Griffin, along with the mega star of the show, actress Robyn Malcolm,(leopard skin outfit on cover of book), skilfully led by chair Simon Prast, as they took us "backstage" for a fascinating insight.
This was a clever piece of programming coming at the end of the day when the punters were running out of steam.
THE IRON BOUND COAST:KAREKARE IN THE EARLY YEARS
All that remained was the launch of this book from new westie publishers Libro International, (headed by Peter Dowling, former publisher at Reed NZ), written by the late Wallace Badham, edited by Waitakere mayor Bob Harvey, a man who has done much to foster the arts in his beloved city, and who is a stalwart supporter of the Going West Festival.
After a glass of wine it was home to watch the rugby test.
More on Sunday.
