Lonely Planet wins web award

Lonely Planet has won an award for its website, with lonelyplanet.com named as the best travel site in the Webby People’s Voice Awards. The Webby Awards have been hailed as the "internet's highest honour" by the New York Times and looks to credit excellence on the internet. Over 500,000 votes were cast by people around the world for their favourite websites, videos and adverts scanning 70 categories.

Lonely Planet global online director, Kelly Brough, said: "We've put a lot of effort into enriching LonelyPlanet.com over the last year."Brough added: "The site has always been a trusted travel community, but now it also has a fresh modern look, details on over 8,000 destinations, thousands of high quality images, videos and maps, as well the ability to book hotels, flights and a range of other services. We're thrilled that web users love all these improvements and have recognised us in this way."

Lonely Planet will be awarded with its Webby at a ceremony in New York on 8th June. The acceptance speeches at the ceremony at limited to just five words.
