NEXT BIG THING AFTER HARRY POTTER?

On yesterday's blog I reported on Barry Cunningham's claim (he's the guy who discovered Harry Potter) that his new series TUNNELS will have the same huge and universal appeal as Harry.

Scholastic NZ has now advised me that the the series will be distributed by Scholastic worldwide and the NZ publication date for the first title is scheduled for November.

More comment overnight from CNN and the Guardian

and this from the Chicken House website:

TUNNELS is the story of fourteen-year-old Will Burrows, who shares a passion for digging with his father. When his father suddenly disappears down an unknown tunnel, Will and his reluctant friend Chester unearth a dark and terrifying secret underground – a secret that may cost them their lives.A spectacular subterranean science-fiction adventure from unlikely duo, Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams.

Will be interesting to see what happens to Tunnels then, it looks interesting, although ultimately it will be children who decide. The original popularity of HP was due to word of mouth promotion by kids although it didn't take long for the publicity machine to take over...
by the way i agree with you about the need for indexes in nz non-fiction... and I always feel reassured by bibliographies too, but they are often missing from New Zealand books too.
