Atholl
Anderson and Aroha Harris, authors of Tangata Whenua: An Illustrated History
(Bridget Williams Books, 2014), will be speaking at the Auckland Writers
Festival this Saturday.
The
free event, at 3pm in the Upper NZI Room of the Aotea Centre, is the midpoint
in a nationwide tour in which the authors have been speaking about their
monumental history of Māori, described as “a landmark in New Zealand history
publishing – an outstanding work of real scholarship, breadth and significance,
which should be read by all New Zealanders”.
Already
they have spoken to enthusiastic audiences in Palmerston North, Wellington,
Christchurch, Dunedin, Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne, Rotorua and Hamilton. Events in
Whangarei and Kaitaia are still to come.
Professor
Anderson (Ngāi Tahu) and Dr Harris (Ngāpuhi, Te Rarawa) are thrilled to be
returning to Auckland six months after the book’s launch at the Auckland
Museum. In this time Tangata Whenua has been shortlisted for the 2015
Royal Society of New Zealand Science Book Prize and has won gold in the 2015
Pride in Print Awards.
The
book, co-authored with the late Dame Judith Binney, continues to gather acclaim
and new readers. Its significance for New Zealanders’ understanding of our
history will also be discussed at the Dunedin Young Writers Festival on the 6th
of June, when Dr Michael Stevens and Leanne Tamaki will speak to Morgan Godfery
about how they contributed to the research that underpins the book.
