Barbara Else’s latest novel for children, The Volume of Possible Endings (Gecko
Press) – the third in her “Tales of Fontania” quartet – is now in stores in New
Zealand and Australia.
The first reviews are out, with the Dominion Post deeming it “an excellent tale of magic, adventure,
invention, humour and silliness”. And ahead of its early-2015 release in the UK
and the US, Kirkus Reviews has called
it “an entertaining romp, more comical than scary and with a poignant but
hopeful close”.
The Volume of Possible
Endings is an action-packed, stand-alone read (you don’t need to read the
other books first) for children ages 10 and over. It follows 12-year-old
Dorrity, the only child in all of Owl Town. She lives with her three brothers,
and life has always been the same. One day Dorrity finds an enchanted book
about her containing five different—and worrying—endings to her own tale. Then
she meets the strange Metalboy, and a thrilling adventure begins. Along the
way, Dorrity starts to unravel the truth about her past…
The first book in the “Tales of Fontania” series, The Travelling Restaurant (2011) has
been translated into French, Dutch and Turkish, and was the winner of numerous
local awards. 2012’s The Queen and the
Nobody Boy was a finalist in last year’s NZ Post Children’s Book Awards,
with the judges declaring it “destined to be a classic”.
