The Women’s
Bookshop is lining up eleven of them for their Ladies’ Litera-Tea, an
indulgent afternoon of feasting on food for the body and the brain – with three
novelists, two cooks, one poet, a peace activist, a musicologist, a stylist, a
philanthropist, a Dame, and a lavish afternoon tea.
“Eleanor
Catton had originally agreed to appear at our Ladies’ Litera-Tea” said Carole
Beu from The Women’s Bookshop, “but, to our delight, she is otherwise engaged!”
The line-up
for the event on Sunday 3 November still features some of New Zealand
THREE NOVELISTS: Sarah Laing (The Fall of Light) combines
her artistic & writing talents in this lively Auckland novel about
architecture; quirky Elizabeth Knox (Wake and Mortal Fire)
inspires adults young & old with her two novels published this year; Pip
Adam (I’m Working on a Building) follows her award-winning short
stories with a novel about building structures, lives & worlds.
TWO COOKS: Alexa Johnston (Ladies, a Plate: Jams & Preserves) gets in a delightfully sticky mess & Kim Evans (Little & Friday: Celebrations) fills our special occasions with delicious fun (& donuts!)
ONE POET: Selina Tusitala Marsh (Dark Sparring) kickboxes & thrills us with her rhythms, her humming list poems, her personal elegies & her literary shoutouts.
A PEACE ACTIVIST: Maire Leadbeater (Peace, Power & Politics: HowNew Zealand
A MUSICOLOGIST: Davinia Caddy (How to Hear Classical Music) opens our eyes & ears to exciting new sounds & sensations!
A STYLIST: LeeAnn Yare (New Zealand Interior Style), who happens to be an airline pilot in her spare time, reveals dozens of quirky design ideas & decorative delights to make us smile & start creating.
A PHILANTHROPIST: Christine Fernyhough (Phylys the Farm Truck; The Road to Castle Hill) inspires us with her support of both gifted & deprived kids, her community work & her sheer hard slog down on the farm.
A DAME: Lynley Dodd (The Life & Art of Lynley Dodd by Finlay Macdonald) shares the creative genius behind her beloved Hairy Maclary & his glorious gang – she may even mention a cat that likes to hide in boxes & a Nickle Nackle Tree that she filled too full of birds.
