Now AA Milne’s classic tale is the oldest book to feature on a list of ‘must-reads’ for under-14s.
The Booktrust asked a panel of experts to compile a list of 100 titles in four categories to mark the start of children’s book week.
The charity’s list includes what it predicts will be considered classics in years to come, including The Hunger Games and JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
However, there are some surprise omissions, including Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Just William and The Gruffalo.
The cut-off comes at the age of 14 because beyond that children tend to progress to more adult literature.
Children’s literature expert Dr Alison Waller said: ‘Every child has the capacity to build their own personal canon. It’s just as exciting to treasure individual finds as it is to work your way through the 100 bests.’
The nation’s top books will be announced on November 25.
