Author Oscar Hijuelos Dies

Author Oscar Hijuelos Dies Stephen J. Boitano/AP

Oscar Hijuelos, the first Latino author to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, died Saturday at the age of 62. His wife said Hijuelos collapsed while playing tennis and never regained consciousness.

Born in Manhattan to Cuban immigrants, Hijuelos grew up in a Spanish-speaking family. His first novel, Our House in the Last World, was published in 1983. Hijuelos stayed away from political writing and instead was more poetic, writing about the Latin immigrant experience. In 1989, he won the Pulitzer for The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love.
