Independent children's publisher Phoenix Yard will launch its début list in March, with a focus on new authors and illustrators and high production values, said commissioning editor and joint founder, Emma Langley.
Langley, whose background is in publishing, said: "We have spent a lot of time in the foreign halls during exhibitions and admired their design styles, especially the French, Spanish and Italian publishers. We wondered how much of that could be successfully published in the UK as people like Emily Gravett have opened up the UK market to more unusual styles of illustration."
The publisher's launch picture book title, Little Red Hood by Marjolaine Leray, is an import from France which Langley described as a "cross between graffiti and high art". She said: "It is also quirky and funny and we expect as many sales to adults and through gift shops as through traditional booksellers."
The company is also launching a fiction title about bereavement. Coping with Chloe (Rosalie Warren) is aimed at 10–13-year-olds, while a young fiction fantasy title, Lyra and the Adventures of the Flying Fish (Peter Emina, Alice Ridley) is aimed at readers aged seven to nine.
