The Heroes of Gallipoli: the Gallantry of New
Zealanders on Gallipoli
Richard Stowers
John Douglas Publishing - David Bateman Publishers - $75.00
With the centenary of the First World War
upon us in 2015, Stowers decided to write this book to increase the awareness
of the unpretentious gallantry and service by New Zealanders during the
Gallipoli campaign, and to help expose the marked disparity in numbers of
honours and awards to New Zealanders compared to Australia and Britain. In
total, there were 549 honours and awards awarded to 360 individual New Zealand
recipients, including 24 nurses.
The book tells the story of the Gallipoli
campaign through the eyes of the gallant New Zealanders. In all, there is an
introduction followed by numerous chapters telling chronologically the battles
and different aspects of the campaign from 25 April 1915 through to 20
December.
The book covers: • The Battle of the
Landing • Dead Man’s Ridge • Disaster at the Daisy Patch • Holding the heights
• Defending the tops at Courtney’s and Quinn’s Posts • The August Offensive •
Unconquerable on Chunuk Bair • The Turkish counter-attack • The needless
carnage on Hill 60 • The deadlock in the trenches until the final evacuation –
each is backed up with photographs and biographical details of gallant award
winners.
There’s a bio on each of the 360 recipients
including full citations, recommendations, newspaper quotes, and letter and
diary quotes. There are many names which became household names: Malone,
Godley, Wallingford, Cunningham, and Plugge.
This book will be a valuable companion
volume to Richard’s earlier book Bloody Gallipoli which he published in 2005,
and will add greater to our understanding of the sheer tenacity and bravery our
men and women who were decorated for distinguished service during the Gallipoli
campaign.
