Georgette Heyer may have been notoriously self-deprecating about her own work – she once said she "ought to be shot for writing such nonsense" – but the queen of Regency romances has been honoured with an English Heritage blue plaque at her birthplace.Famous fans including Stephen Fry, as well as Heyer's nephew and daughter-in-law, turned up for the unveiling of the plaque in south-west London, with Fry revealing that he had been "completely hooked" on her romances since his school days.

This is so very true. Nobody thinks of WH Smith as a bookshop any more. It does a lot of different things and does all of them badly. I have now entirely stopped going to WHS because I am infuriated by their policy of forcing the staff to say 'would you like any half price chocolate?'to every single customer every single time, even if you go in there every day to buy the newspaper.
