David Shelley is to take over as c.e.o. of Little, Brown in July, with current c.e.o. Ursula Mackenzie working on “special projects” for the publisher and its parent company Hachette UK until her retirement at the end of 2016.
Shelley, hitherto Little, Brown publisher, has now been appointed deputy c.e.o. of Little, Brown, reporting to Mackenzie, and he will take over the c.e.o. role on 1st July. The 38-year-old joined the Hachette UK main board on 1st January.
Led by hits from David Walliams, Jeff Kinney and Egmont’s Minecraft stable, the UK children’s market hit an all-time high in revenue and market share in 2014, and exceeded sales of Adult Fiction for the first time since accurate records began.
Penguin Random House division Cornerstone is to take over trade publication of titles crowd-funded by start-up Unbound, after the two companies agreed a joint venture deal.
Iain Millar, Michael Bhaskar and Nick Barreto are to launch a new digital publishing venture, with the intention of publishing a range of “engaging” fiction and non-fiction titles as e-books, apps and on the web. Canelo will launch officially in the spring, and expects to publish between 100 and 150 digital books in its first year.
The Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals (CILIP) has said it will make a decision on revising the criteria for the Carnegie children’s book award this year, after the announcement of the 2015 award in June.
