Auckland's 175th Anniversary Day and MKWC Open Day

The Centre, Jan 2015Happy dodransbicentennial, Auckland
It’s Auckland’s dodransbicentennial this weekend - its 175th birthday.
Celebrate with picnic and poetry in the garden of the historic Signalman’s House on Takarunga Mt Victoria on Auckland Anniversary Day.

The Ports of Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta will be under way on the beautiful Waitemata Harbour. Enjoy the spectacle of sails and our beautiful garden, or look through the house and our collection of literary memorabilia.
Local poets and writers will read their work – including our last writer in residence Anne Kennedy, performance poet Gus Simonovic and some of the young writers who have taken part in our creative writing programmes.

The Signalman’s House – home of the Michael King Writers’ Centre - is half way up the road to the summit of Takarunga Mt Victoria in Devonport. Takarunga Mt Victoria is rich in Maori heritage as well as playing an important role for early European settlers.
Park on Kerr Street or on top of Takarunga Mt Victoria. Or catch the ferry from the city and enjoy the 10 minute walk through the village.

The open day is organised by the Devonport Friends of the Michael King Writers’ Centre.  BYO picnic. Tea and coffee will be available. This is a free event and all are welcome.

Monday 26 January – 11 am to 4 pm
Poetry readings from 1 pm
