John Bayley, the author, critic and widower of novelist Dame Iris Murdoch, has died aged 89, it was announced yesterday.
The Oxford University professor, who’s own fame was often eclipsed by that of his wife, died peacefully at his home in Lanzarote, his family said.
Mr Bayley sparked both plaudits and controversy in a series of memoirs he wrote about his relationship with his wife and her descent in later life because of Alzheimer’s disease.
The first instalment, Iris, a Memoir, was later made in to the Oscar winning film, Iris, starring Jim Broadbent and Dame Judi Dench.
