Mary McCallum from Makaro Press, Emma Barnes and Pip Adam from Cats and Spaghetti Press, and Marie Hodgkinson from Paper Road Press have all begun their own publishing houses in Wellington, in the past 12 months. All four publishers are from diverse (though literary) backgrounds, and each are heading in different directions. Starting a publishing company doesn’t sound like something that you would do for the money, so I thought I’d have a chat to these women and talk further about what it is that has drawn them down this path.

Publishing books for the booktrade market is rather like Hollywood movies where it's expected that 6 out of 10 titles will lose money, 3 will make a small profit and 1 in 10 will be a blockbuster producing enough profit to justify the rest. OK as long as the amounts involved are from the cream and not the bread and butter income...
