Vasanti Unka’s The Boring Book wins the New Zealand Post Margaret
Mahy Book of the Year at the New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and
Young Adults. The Boring Book is
also the winner of the Awards’ Picture Book category.
Penguin Random House New Zealand is incredibly proud
that Vasanti Unka’s The Boring Book (Puffin) has won the New Zealand
Post Margaret Mahy Book of the Year at the prestigious New Zealand Post Book
Awards for Children and Young Adults. The Boring Book was also the
winner of the Awards’ Picture Book category. The awards were announced at a
ceremony held in Auckland last night.
The Boring Book was released in November 2013 and
has already attracted a 2014 Storylines Notable Book award. This wonderful
picture book, complete with miniature book inserts, is as ingenious as it is
delightful, exploring the importance of books and words in a fun and imaginative
way. The Boring Book is most certainly NOT a boring book!
Vasanti Unka is a designer and illustrator based in
Auckland. She is the illustrator of The Bean's Story, which was a
2008 Storylines Notable Book, and Hill & Hole by Kyle
Mewburn. Hill & Hole was shortlisted for the 2011 New
Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. It won the LIANZA
Russell Clark Award for illustration the same year and was also the first
children's book to win the Gerard Reid Award for Best Book at the PANZ Book
Design Awards.
“The
Boring Book exhibits
the highest quality of design and its presentation is thoroughly original. The
story takes delightful unexpected turns that charm afresh with each reading.
Small children and older readers alike will be delighted by its subversive
touches, and they’ll be entertained by its warmth and fun,” says Barbara Else,
the Awards’ Convenor of Judges.
Margaret Thompson, Managing Director
of Penguin Random House New Zealand states, “We are delighted to congratulate
Vasanti on winning these awards and are thrilled to share in her remarkable success.”
