It is sad to report that
the Holloway Press, after 20 years and some 40 publications, is coming to an
end. The Faculty of Arts of the University of Auckland which has generously
supported the Press since its foundation in 1994 has decided to cease financial
support for new publications and my part-time contract as Director will end on
September 1.
However, there is something positive to report. From July 4 until 30 August a retrospective exhibition, Dark Arts: Twenty Years of the Holloway Press will be shown at the Gus Fisher Gallery, curated by Francis McWhannell. Francis has also prepared a Checklist of all Holloway Press publications which is being printed letterpress by Tara McLeod and will be available for sale at the exhibition in an edition of 100 copies. The cost will be $20. Orders are invited.
A public programme of talks about the Holloway Press involving Tara McLeod, Brendan O'Brien, Francis McWhannell and Peter Simpson will be held during the time the exhibition is running. Unfortunately Alan Loney, co-founder and first printer of the Press, is unable to make the trip from Melbourne to participate. Details of the public programme will be sent to you shortly.
You are warmly invited to attend the opening of the exhibition on Friday 4 July at 5.30pm at the Gus Fisher Gallery, 74 Shortland Street, Auckland.
I wish to thank you all for the support you have extended to the Holloway Press and to me as its Director over the years, whether as authors, artists, photographers, block makers, letterpress operators, printers, binders, purchasers, editors, journalists, reviewers, university general staff or in other ways. It has been one of the most absorbing and worthwhile activities I have ever been involved with and I am proud of the legacy the press will leave behind.
Best wishes,
Peter
