THE first draft took just two-and-a-half days to write but that didn't stop 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' from becoming the number one book of the decade.
The 2006 novel -- by Irish author John Boyne -- was yesterday found to be the most popular book in Ireland.
The 50 most popular books since 2000 were revealed at the official launch of the Eason Club, an interactive online forum for book lovers and book clubs.
In the club's first poll -- which attracted 1,700 voters -- respondents were asked to choose their top reads of the noughties from a list of 125 books selected by Easons on the basis of sales over the past 10 years.
The other Irish books in the Top 50 were: Colm Toibin's 'Brooklyn' (20); Sebastian Barry's 'The Secret Scripture' (21); Colum McCann's 'Let The Great World Spin' (27); Joseph O'Connor's 'Star of the Sea' (28); Sebastian Barry's 'A Long Long Way' (30); Roddy Doyle's 'Paula Spencer' (37); John McGahern's 'That They May Face the Rising Sun' (38); John Banville's 'The Sea' (44); Roddy Doyle's 'A Star Called Henry' (45); and Anne Enright's 'The Gathering' (50).
