Awards: Indies Choice Winners, PEN Shortlists, and More

Publishers Lunch


The winners of the Indies Choice Book Awards were announced Thursday afternoon:

Adult Fiction: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr (Scribner)
Adult Nonfiction: Being Mortal by Atul Gawande (Metropolitan)
Adult Debut: The Martian by Andy Weir (Crown)
Young Adult: The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers)

Winners of the E.B. White Read-Aloud Awards are:
Middle Reader: Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson (Nancy Paulsen Books)
Picture Book: Sam and Dave Dig a Hole by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Jon Klassen (Candlewick)

Additionally, Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer will jointly receive the Indie Champion Award.

The PEN Literary Awards announced shortlists in a number of categories. Up for the PEN/Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction are National Book Award winner Phil Klay's Redeployment; Oprah Book Club 2.0 pick Ruby by Cynthia Bond; as well as The Unamericans by Molly Antopol; Love Me Back by Merritt Tierce; and The Dog by Jack Livings. Other notable nominees include NBCC poetry winner Claudia Rankine and NBCC fiction nominee Rabih Allemedine for the Open Book Award; Elizabeth Kolbert for science writing; Sheri Fink for nonfiction; and Jeff Hobbs for biography.

Klay is among the eight finalists for the Chautaqua Prize, with the winner to be announced next month.

Australia's Stella Prize announced its shortlist of six, with the winner to be named on April 21.
