Jung Chang is the author of the best-selling books Wild
Swans: Three Daughters of China, and Mao: The Unknown Story (with Jon
Halliday), which have been translated into more than 40 languages and sold more
than 15 million copies, in addition to millions in pirated editions and
computer downloads in mainland China where both books are banned. Her new book
is Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine Who Launched Modern China (Jonathan
Cape, ISBN: 978-0-224-08744-5), and she is a guest of Writers Week during the NZ
Festival (on 8 March). She will also guest at an afternoon event in Dunedin (9
March), and evening events presented by the Auckland Writers Festival (10
March), and The Press Christchurch Writers Festival (11 March).
9:05 Stuart McNaughton
Professor Stuart McNaughton is Director of the Woolf
Fisher Research Centre at the University of Auckland's Faculty of Education. He
researches and publishes widely in areas of children's development and the
design of effective educational programmes including models of large scale
interventions with schools. For the past three years he has worked with more
than 15 schools instigating the Woolf Fisher Lead Teacher Masters Scholarships
that are focused on improving achievement in their schools through leadership
problem solving, and recently in a research partnership with Manaiakalani
schools in Tamaki has co-developed a post-graduate programme to support the
digital learning, community-based programmes they have developed across their
cluster. He is a member of a number of international scientific organisations
in child development, educational research and literacy, and is about to be
inducted into the International Reading Association's Reading Hall of Fame.

Australian "pocket filmmaker" Jason van
Genderen has been making internationally award-winning short films on mobile
phones since his 2008 film documenting homelessness, Mankind is No Island,
became a viral hit on YouTube with over a million views. He is visiting New
Plymouth, for Tropfest Roughcut, a symposium that sits alongside Tropfest, the New
Zealand leg of the world's largest short film festival.

law-student-turned-bartender Jacob Briars earned the nickname "vodka
professor" during his long-running position as brand ambassador for
42Below vodka. As head of training and education for Bacardi, he works with
individual brand ambassadors and bartenders and is a frequent presenter at
cocktail conferences and other venues, while checking out the best bars, cafes
and cocktails all over the world.
11:05 Liza Kindred
Liza Kindred is the founder and CEO of Third Wave
Fashion, a fashion tech think tank. She cofounded the nail-polish rental
startup Lacquerous, and advises a number of new commerce startups. She opened
her first business, a fashion forward clothing boutique, at the age of 22, and
has since worked in retail buying, fashion show production, photo styling, and
most recently as managing partner at the multi-million dollar web development
and education company Lullabot. She is writing a book, The Third Wave of Commerce:
How We Buy Now (O'Reilly), and speaks frequently about the future of fashion
and the future of commerce; doing so this week in Wellington at Webstock 2014.
11:45 Kate's Klassic
Kate Camp has published five collections of poems, most
recently Snow White's Coffin (Victoria University Press, ISBN:
978-0-86473-888-2). Kate will discuss We Will Not Cease by Archibald Baxter,
the 1939 autobiography of a New Zealand conscientious objector during World War
I.
