New Writers’ Bursary – applications closing soon

Published writers at an early stage of their career are eligible to apply for the Louis Johnson New Writers’ Bursary. Applications close on 28 February 2014 as part of the Creative New Zealand Arts Grant round.  The amount awarded will vary depending on the project.

Previous recipients of the Louis Johnson New Writers’ Bursary include Kirsten McDougall (2013), Bianca Zander (2012) and Breton Dukes (2011).

This annual bursary was set up in 1989 with a bequest from New Zealand writer Louis Johnson’s estate.  Johnson died in 1988 having just completed a Katherine Mansfield Memorial Fellowship in Menton.  He was a prolific poet, writer, reviewer and broadcaster who established the New Zealand Poetry Yearbook and started his own press, Antipodes. This award, established by his wife Cecilia, carries on his tradition of encouraging developing New Zealand talent.
