A new Sunday street market, Goldsmith Row Book Market, is set to open in Hackney on May 13th every Sunday from 9am to 4pm.
The market will sell new and second hand titles at the junction of Hackney Road and Columbia Road, right by Hackney City Farm. The Goldsmith Row Book Market will be an addition to East End’s thriving market scene which includes Brick Lane, Columbia Road, Petticoat Lane and Spitalfields.
Market founder and photography bookseller Neil Burgess says: “It’s a succession of fantastic markets and the books will be a great addition to that Sunday morning experience.”
Books and coffee but no cupcakes
Around 20 booksellers have signed up to take part in the market so far, including Pages of Hackney, Donlon Books, Artwords Bookshop, photographer’s agency nbpictures and Muatta Book. Even Foyles bookshop has expressed an interest in participating. Organisers are hoping for around 30 stalls opening weekend.
A range of books will be on offer, with a strong focus on art, photography and design books. Each stall will have a specialty such as Pengiun classics, cookery books or graphic novels.
There will also be “fantastic coffee” on offer, but strictly “no cupcakes.”
Fighting back
Burgess says that independent booksellers may not be thriving but “we’re fighting back.”
“Selling books has under gone a massive transformation in the last twenty years. Many small book sellers were forced out of business by the abolition of the ‘’ which fixed the recommended retail price of books and by the subsequent the growth of big chain stores. Those chains in turn have been put under immense pressure by Amazon and other internet sellers. Now the independents are fighting back “
