Come and hear two exciting writers – one from France, one from NZ – read at Millwood Gallery over a glass of wine.
6 – 7 pm, Monday 21 March 2011
Millwood Gallery, 291b Tinakori Road, Thorndon
Award-winning French writer in residence at Thorndon’s Randell Cottage – Yann Apperry – will read “a little florilège of poetry and prose” and talk about his musical collaborations, and Wellington poet and dancer Jo Thorpe will delve into her new collection In/let (Steel Roberts) which – in its accomplished use of rhythms and language – straddles both poetry and dance.
Yann Apperry (left) is a bilingual French-American who writes in both languages and translates his own texts. He is an accomplished novelist, playwright, poet and librettist. Yann published his first novel Qui Vive at the age of 25 and was awarded the “Prix Bretagne” – earning acclaim as the most talented writer of his generation in France.
During the same year, he was laureate of Fondation Hachette and writer in residence at Villa Médicis in Rome (1997-98). In 2000, he was awarded the “Prix Médicis” for Diabolus in Musica and the “Prix Goncourt des Lycéens” in 2003 for Farrago – two major French literary prizes. Yann Apperry’s project during his stay at Randell Cottage involves music and poetry.
Jo Thorpe is a poet, dancer and dance history teacher at the NZ School of Dance, and - like Yann - her work springs from both these creative areas. She has published two collections of poetry: Len & Other Poems and In/let (Steele Roberts), and been published widely including most recently on www.tuesdaypoem.blogspot.com . Tuesday Poem curator Mary McCallum says In/let is one of the stand-out collections of the year: ‘the glittering/fairytale, muscular/dancing, instinctive poems within… Gorgeous!’
Jo is also Trustee for the Randell Cottage Writers Trust.
