Jennifer Lawrence To Play Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games Adaptation

By Maryann Yin on Galley Cat, March 17, 2011

Winter’s Bone actress Jennifer Lawrence will play Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games film adaptation. As of this writing, fans have left more than 380 comments on Facebook, many protesting the choice.

We’ve included some of the comments below. Some complain that Lawrence (pictured, via) is too “old” because she is 20-years-old. In the first book, Katniss is 16. Others find fault with her appearance; Lawrence has blond hair, milky-colored skin, and blue eyes. Author Suzanne Collins describes Katniss as being a brunette with an olive complexion and gray eyes.

Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, has said in past interviews that his hiring was met with initial fan protest. These days, Pattinson enjoys great popularity and has even gotten mobbed during outdoor movie shoots. What do you think?

Molly Whitbey: “Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!! Ok first she’s blond, second she’s to old, third it should be a less know actress, fourth…….shall I contine? Plain and simple NO!”

Valerie Douglas: “I know it is too much to hope that the actress they choose is not only talented (which Jennifer Lawrence may or may not be) but is also not traditionally ‘pretty’. Katniss, for me, is stunning (when dressed up by her handlers), but not classic in her beauty. It is her inner strength and smarts that make her breath-taking.”

Elizabeth Lange Cannella: “As an author myself, I vote for Hailee [Steinfeld]. I saw True Grit and Winter’s Bone. I also read all three HG [Hunger Games] books. I think Hailee would be the perfect Katniss!”

Alison Jordan: “Alas, they won’t pick someone under 18 to be Katniss because they won’t be able to film as many hours a day with a minor. They will go the Percy Jackson route and pick older actors and seal the fate of the movie as a one movie only rather than a triology because the die hard HG fans won’t relate to it and won’t go see it a half-dozen times. They should follow the Harry Potter and Twilight methodology and follow the book as closely as possible.”

Emily Grace Miller: “I really hope the voices of the fans will be heard on here.
We are the people who have envisioned Katniss since we first started reading these books. To make her into some glamorous star that would sell more tickets will be to let all of the fans of the Hunger Games series down.”
