Caribou Island
David Vann
Penguin - $30
Bestselling author David Vann has just arrived in New Zealand as has his new novel Caribou Island.
David will be in NZ until the end of May and will be teaching at Victoria University.
Caribou Island has made quite a splash overseas and we will have the chance to hear and meet David Vann as he is a guest speaker at the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival in May. He is also the author of the hugely acclaimed short story collectiomn, Legend of a Suicide. That title won the Grace Paley Prize abd was named a Notable Book of 2008 by the New York Times and several other US newspapers.
In Carabou Island three sets of couples lives intertwine and the faults in this tired family tapestry are exposed.
A wonderful piece of writing but I must say I found it both powerful and disturbing , one doesn't leave it feeling happy!
