Dan Brown and Senator Edward M. Kennedy helped kick off the fall bookselling season and delivered some of the strong sales that booksellers have been craving all year.
On Monday, the publisher announced that first-week sales of hardcover, audio and e-book editions of “The Lost Symbol,” Mr. Brown’s follow-up to “The Da Vinci Code,” had exceeded 2 million copies in the U.S., Britain and Canada. According to Nielsen BookScan, which tracks about 70 percent of retail sales in the U.S. and does not include figures from outlets like Wal-Mart, where heavily discounted copies of “The Lost Symbol” are likely to have sold strongly, the book had sold 1.16 million copies through Saturday.
