you to celebrate the recent publication of The Paris
of the west, by Karen McMillan.
A
page-turning historical novel set in 1940s San Francisco goes from jazz clubs
to the sun-kissed vineyards of Sonoma. A story of love, loss and second
chances.
A
publishing professional by day and a writer by night, Karen will talk about her
new book, and how to get published.
Copies
available for purchase and signing. Purchase a book on the night and
go into a draw to win a book prize pack worth over $500.

Jenny Haworth: Behind the
twisted wire

Jenny Haworth will talk about
her book Behind the twisted wire, which is the story of the work of New
Zealand's commissioned war artists - Nugent Welch and George Butler and the
strange tale of Arthur Pearse.
Jenny will then focus on the
work of the Auckland soldier artists - the men who painted in the trenches in
an effort to record their experiences.
Some of these artists like
John Weeks, Francis McCracken, W. Robert Johnson and James Turkington were to
become major figures in the post-war art world. Another man, Arthur
Lloyd, was too badly injured to continue to paint after the war.
Also discussed will be Horace
Moore-Jones, perhaps the most important artist at Gallipoli.
Copies of the book will
be available for purchase and signing at the event. Light refreshments will be
served from 6pm.

from Wordsworth to C.K. Stead.

chance to forgo medication for life-affirming poetry. This event has been
organized by the Auckland Writers Festival and is supported by the British
Council NZ and St John.
