WORDSONGS, a
concert of new song settings of much-loved New Zealand poems by James K Baxter,
Hone Tuwhare, Eileen Duggan, Bill Manhire, Alistair Te Ariki Campbell and David
Mitchell, is coming to St Peter’s Hall in Paekakariki on Sunday 3 April at 7pm.
The
songs will be performed by composer-pianist Norman Meehan, singer Hannah
Griffin and saxophonist Blair Latham, with readings and introductions by Bill
Manhire. Their show, recently toured in
South Island by Chamber Music New Zealand, features songs from the new CD Small
Holes in the Silence, available from Rattle Records.
The
evening will begin on a strong local note with a welcome by Sunny Amey and
readings by Paekakarki resident Dinah Hawken.
Dinah is a critically acclaimed New Zealand poet whose seventh
collection of poetry, Ocean and Stone,
was published in September by Victoria University Press. Ocean
and Stone, with its social and environmental concerns, has been described
by the publishers as “… essential Dinah Hawken, at once meditative and
resolute.” Four of Dinah's collections
have been finalists in the New Zealand Book Awards.
