The launch of a new book is always a special occasion, but it’s rare to go to one where the canapés run to quail eggs and caviar, and the drinks include champagne and cocktails. But then anything that Eunonia Publishing do, they do in an über cool way; artlessly and with great panache.
On Thursday evening, Eunoia launched
their first novel, Vivienne’s Blog, amid a crowd of 100+ in the bustling
heart of Ponsonby Central. Penned by a brilliant lawyer of some 30 years, who
for legal reasons writes under the nom de plume, Stephen Leaton, Vivienne’s
Blog is a cryptic masterpiece of chilling
suspense. The novel is a psychological thriller writ large; one which takes the
reader on a mesmerising journey into the mind of a gifted, engagingly witty,
but disturbingly deceitful woman who uses an encrypted blog to communicate with
her ex-lover, Callum. Haunting poetic, the ingenious plot leaves the reader
confounded at every turn.
The massive loft space upstairs at
Ponsonby Central (above) was cleverly transformed by First Scene, who staged the room
with props in keeping with the atmosphere of Vivenne’s Blog, including a
vintage perambulator, stark tree branches and eerie crows. Actress Penny Ashton
engaged guests with several lively readings from the novel, and Eunoia Director
Karen Breen paid tribute to Stephen Leaton, the superb production values that
went into creating the bespoke deluxe edition of Vivienne’s Blog,
including leather binding and deckled pages, and the pride of publishing
Eunoia’s first literary novel.
Eunoia Publishing is an independent
publishing company that was formed earlier this year by a group of published
writers.
